ash.ØK is a producer with a reputation for sharing vision, for allowing his collaborators to shine. This is remarkably clear on “The Unravelled”. The beauty of the track comes in waves. The song begins with layers of beats and heavy synths that are complimented by unique and angelic backing vocals, then turns to ground itself in Rebecca Loebe’s melodious voice. This track — and the video that accompanies it — never relents. At times, the lusciousness proves almost dizzying.
The mood of the song, at first, evokes a nighttime thoughtfulness, and the video plays with this and the notes of anxiety and love hidden in the corners. In the clip, we meet a couple with a young child at odds with their situation. The stress comes from the everyday problems — nothing overwrought or dramatic threatens the peace of this family, though the pain is real. The true antagonist is much more familiar: the bills.
The video, which was directed by Patrick Mason, is heartbreaking. It both takes inspiration from the track and propels the music forward with restless scenes of fixing cars and lighting bills on fire biting into each other. By the conclusion, the clip seems inseparable from the music, and vice-versa, and yet each carve a path of their own narrative.
