Bencoolen is a band that, at all times, gives the sense of being perfectly in sync with each other.
On their latest release — the original, jazzy and twisting “Give It Up” — the band blends genres with grace and precision. The song begins with a distant, jangly mood-enhanced intro, then breaks open into something that embraces the jazziness of the saxophone, the snap of a snare drum, and — eventually — the all-out power of a rollicking guitar solo.
Showcasing the unity with which Bencoolen can tap into, the accompanying clip shows the band performing together at Ivakota Studios. There is a sense of seriousness about the music, but also a playfulness in the creation of it. As the song shifts into new energy, the performances become more enhanced and you can almost believe you are in the room with these guys.
The Washington, D.C.-based quintet have already released their cover of Tom Misch’s “Beautiful Escape” to acclaim, but this original track really cuts to who they are: an energy-humming, propelling collection of artists ready to invite you into stylistic blending.
