There is power in the restrained, which is why the term “low-key” feels too small, too boxed in to properly describe Big Thief‘s “Mythological Beauty”. The low-key elements in the song are so big in their discretion that inevitably they crack open. They become something otherworldly. The fantasy themed video for the track acknowledges this: big in its narrative, modest in its clear understanding of theme. Like the song, the video breaks open to reveal something bigger. Adrianne Lenker’s voice cries out as the guitar continues a steady pace and her on-screen travelling companion and real-life Big Thief collaborator, Buck Meek, falls. She carries him forward and onward.
“Mythological Beauty” is from Big Thief’s upcoming second album, Capacity, which will be released through Saddle Creek. The record promises shows of strength, an array of strong characters, and a path through the difficulties that life throws at us. Like her character in “Mythological Beauty”, Lenker becomes a guide and a saviour, even diving into wounds if it means crafting something meaningful.
