Broke Royals are back in the wilderness in their video for “Higher”. With their ever-melodic hooks and ever-extraordinary natural visions, this band is in the game for the long haul with their folk and rock tinged pop music.
The drums acts as the first stand-out ingredient on “Higher”, with the steady rhythm finding an addictive quality in cracks of flourish, but when the verse drops low and the piano takes over with an emotional melody, the absence of drums is just as aptly handled. Soaring vocals create the mood of the track, finding a bit of country in the storytelling and sentiment. The song deals with longing and loneliness, but also a belief in better times.
“Higher, higher, I’ll take you higher, oh my love,” the chorus releases while the band make the trek up Georgia’s highest mountain (Brasstown Bald). Donning formal wear and relishing in the waterfalls, the trees, and the views from the top, the band eventually find their instruments at a lookout spot and the pieces all fall into place. The video is nothing short of gorgeous, but watching Broke Royals at their art is something special in and of itself, as if they want to tell us that there will always be difficult times in our lives, but where there is passion, there is joy.
