Approachable. Affable. Friendly. Whatever word you want to use, Coopertheband seem to exude it. Maybe it’s the way their music walks the edge between alt-rock and pop in the same way Imagine Dragons’ (another convivial American group) does. Or maybe it’s how they intelligently weave tales in a way that becomes relatable. Coopertheband have excelled at this for some time, but it becomes abundantly clear in their new video for the track “Rebels” — a fight song with an upbeat tempo and a world of energy.
We all have a story about the night the board game got out of hand. You know, when the game becomes personal and pacts are broken and things are said that CAN’T BE UNSAID, GARY. That’s all of us, right? Coopertheband bring the fight to life with colourful chalk powder; the images bounce between a delightfully messy “battlefield” and the game itself. Phoebe Scott’s vocals swing powerfully from moment to moment, image to image, culminating in a dark room with the musicians at their instruments. It’s another layer of embedded reality.
This is a music video that I would live inside of if I could. Like a good board game, it’s an immersive catharsis.
