With members in Belgium, the UK, and Australia, the art rock band Cosmopolis are a project that showcases the brilliance that can happen when collaboration takes on a new form.

“The Distances” is Cosmopolis’ third single. Continuing their exploration of moody dark wave with a post-punk resonance, the project pulses low with menace and luscious harmonies. The chilling rattle of percussion kicks off the song before the vocals come in on top, spacious and slow. Soon, the song is filling the room, taking up air, and hanging around your brain.

The song is ghostly in subject matter and ambiance. “Don’t stay, you’re not welcome here, you’re not wanted here, get outta here,” the lyrics repeat. Concreteness makes itself known just after the halfway point when the song rears up, like something you didn’t know you were waiting for.

The present moves with the nostalgic effects of the past, but pulls away just as you get a grip.

To hear more from Cosmopolis, you can find them on their website, Spotify, and Facebook page. You can also follow them on Twitter for more music and news.
