Taking on the challenge of bringing something new to rock & roll, Direct Divide have exploded onto the scene with violin infused rock with soaring female vocals. The band — which is made up of vocalist and violin player extraordinaire Razz, multi-instrumentalist and engineer Kevin Proctor, and Valdemar Huguet on percussion — have already released one full length album, Bridges, and are now back with a Kickstarter funded EP titled Own Your Ocean, which will be available on July 24th, 2015.
The five song EP shows the many sides of Direct Divide’s talents and influences. The edgy punk spirits of Muse mixed with the rock-and-orchestra sounds of Apocalyptica, with a little Florence Welch thrown in for good measure. The first track, “Kick It” is driven by fiddle intermingling with electric guitar. “Renegade” puts the emphasis on Razz’s vocals, while “Tide is Rising” works perfectly as a midpoint to bring themes (and water imagery through soundscapes) together. “We Are Legion” sees the return of the fight-song style that worked so well in the first track and that may be considered a defining characteristic of Direct Divide.
Finally, “1000 Years” is the first single from the EP, as well as the closing track. Watch the music video above and experience a little of everything that Own Your Ocean has to offer with a celebration of natural spaces, late nights, and glamorous bike rides. While the track waits with the elegant violin solo (a perfect ending for the EP), the piano and vocal elegance works alongside the perfectly elevating percussion.
