“PLAY LOUD!,” reads the instruction on the video for Down the Lees’ track “Antiseptic Heart”. The song starts with a soft — yet heavy — hum of guitar and bass, but this one explodes into something that requires volume to be best felt.
Down the Lees began as Laura Lee Schultz’s solo project, but after two albums and an EP, she has opted to expand the project into a three piece with enough gusto to pull the breath out of you. “Antiseptic Heart” is a piercing single and a ode to the strength it takes to keep creating art in a world that can be cruel in its instantaneity. The lyrics are cutting but the band is passionately unified, lending anticipation to upcoming album, Bury the Sun. Here, instrumental depth is contrasted against the piercing call of Schultz’s voice.
The clip for “Antiseptic Heart” matches the dark shoegaze sound by placing all the focus on the band as they perform in front of an empty venue. There is a sense of loneliness, but also starkness. Lights flash as the black and white footage fluctuates in contrast. The video is hypnotic without being overwhelming.
