When Earthquake Lights release a video, they want to make sure the viewing experience is as real and raw as their sound. Pulling heavy guitar riffs together with a steady bass rhythm, crashing percussion, and organ lines tilting at the band’s jazz influences, this is a group with a dedication to their craft and “Choke ‘Em Up” is the evidence.
There is no extra gloss to this clip, which shows the drum set in all its taped-up glory, the musicians each letting loose in turn, and the band as a whole in full synchronous swing. Rock’n’roll lurches up, then tones back down, evoking rock revivalists like The Black Keys and the familiar edge of The Who.
Recorded at Douglass Recording, the video for “Choke ‘Em Up” shows that the New York City band have been gearing up for the upcoming release of their debut album, Distress Signals. There is no doubt they are ready to take the stage. All we have left to do is wait.
