Emeline is not afraid of speaking her mind. She may create catchy pop tunes and set her music videos at teenage pool parties, but she hones in on the dark sides of youth and asks the big questions. “Do you even really respect me at all?” she sings on her track “Angel”, “I don’t think anybody does,” she concludes. Her voice belongs in the charts, a sweet soprano with crystal clarity.
The video is fun and foreboding at once. The nighttime party shots have an element of danger, which Emeline navigates in disguise, while the daytime feels like a struggle — a fight for identity beyond the party persona. By the end of the clip there is the sense that the Emeline of the video has come to some conclusion, that she will beat the isolation and be herself.
Emeline recently performed at the Boston Women’s March (you can and should watch her video from the march here). This is an artist who knows what she wants to say, and will work to get her message heard and to see change happen. We need more artists like Emeline in the world right now.
