Lately, there’s been plenty of Canadian talent peppering the NSM pages, and coming in fresh is another Torontonian with his eyes on changing soundscapes and pushing boundaries. Erich Mrak is a young artist whose genres fall between pop, R&B, and hip-hop, with an emphasis on experimental melodies. “Navigate” — which the artist wrote with his producer Bento — is strong proof of his talent.
“My life is sideways,” Mrak croons just before the minimal synth plays out a small off-kilter tune that has an element of chip sliced underneath the glitchy pseudo-beat. “Lost in the pretty lies”. The track outlines the feelings of anxiety that comes from not understanding where someone else is coming from, but knowing there is no blame for it. It’s exactly as spacious as it needs to be.
There is no shortage of mathematical addictiveness on the track, which correlates with the carefully selected release schedule. “Navigate” is the first of six tracks that will be released, one a month, and will create an as-of-yet untitled EP. At the end of each month a live version of the track will be released, leaving plenty to look forward to.
