There are love songs, there are breakup songs, and then there is what comes between. Erich Mrak has created a hip-hop pop gem that explores this space — the places where commitment meets emotions meets logic. It’s a juggle that most people know all too well, but Mrak finds the beats within the conflict.
The Toronto-based rapper and songwriter uses chill synths to fill out the track as his slow flow of relatable lyrics slide on. The chorus is mellow in tone, but heavy with meaning. The ebb and flow of the hook is romantic, the calm vocals sweet, so that in their absence near the end of the track the missing pieces of the relationship become near tangible. Is it soft melody juxtaposed against hard feelings, or is the softness fundamental to the meaning? I imagine that the answer strikes each listener differently, but always strikes true.
