Though his hits are recognized across the world, Hanz “Falco” Hölzel may not have reached the household name status that other 80s electronic acts seemed to reach: at least not in North America. Vancouver’s Front Line Assembly are big fans, though, and they feel it’s time to put Falco, and Amadeus Mozart, back in the spotlight with their rendition of “Rock Me Amadeus”.

Jimmy Urine of Mindless Self Indulgence is featured in the roll of Falco: providing smooth German and pitch-jumping vocals as well as an energetic performance two screens removed in the clip. His addition is homage-style, bringing back the original sense of the 80s. Where the clip moves beyond is in the verses, when the synths jump into the futuristic and the bass is loaded. In these moments the clip swings into a beach scene reminiscent of a Coca-Cola or beer commercial. But even this contemporary scene of vibrant paradise is no match for the electronic switches of Front Line Assembly, which sends it into glitched-out territory before long.

An homage, a spin, a take of their own: however this rendition of an old classic works, it certainly provides a strong dose of fun. “Rock Me Amadeus” comes off Front Line Assembly’s nineteenth studio album, Wake Up the Coma.
