Before Chris Cosby and his brother Chip formed Heartracer in Richmond, Virginia, Chris was diagnosed with Tachycardia — a condition that has his heart speeding up and slowing down randomly. This condition inspired the name of the band, but also finds a match in the way their tunes wind and unravel around you.
“Darling” is full of synth-pop hooks that at first blast with the power of the 80s, but then finds groove in thoroughly contemporary anthemic pop-rock. The band — also featuring Wes Tatum on bass and Bryan Reyes on drums and percussion — lurch up with quick pacing as the lyrics spin story and longing. It’s danceable heartbreak with a high-energy spirit.
The accompanying clip shows the band backlit in mostly reds and blues, performing with passion as they showcase their skills. The camera lingers on Chris Cosby in a white-blazer — continuing the sense of the 80s — as he emotes and frames the lyrics with gestures to match. The footage transitions as though someone has gone and drawn on the reel of film, lending a new edge to the clip.
If big energy, nods to nostalgia, and infectious hooks get you excited for the seasonal change the way they do me, you won’t want to miss “Darling”.
