Following up on the success of 2015’s Painted Shut, Hop Along are back with a new album. The Philadelphia band has been raking in the great reviews for the unique stories that they tell and the fun with which they tell them. Bark Your Head Off, Dog, comes from Saddle Creek and kicks off with the infinitely catchy release of “How Simple”.
With melodies popping up and fading back again — twisting and twirling with the raw sweetness of Frances Quinlan’s voice — this track comes alive as it goes. Guitar licks build, a chorus comes in to help sing the crux of the song, the semi-soothing: “Don’t worry. We’ll both find out, just not together.” Everything is bittersweet and energetic.
The video feels like what everyone imagines as they dance alone in their room. In the process of getting ready for the day, we (and a spotlight) follow Quinlan from the bathroom to her room, down the hall, and into the kitchen. She dances and sings and takes herself seriously as the band appears in spotlight flashes around her. It’s familiar and dream-like, and gives a great suggestion of how to enjoy the song. Get up and dance, sing along, it’s an anthem of catharsis.
