Jared Dylan creates pop with an awareness of what has come before — but what else would you expect from someone who won the BMI John Lennon songwriting scholarship in 2013. This is an artist with a keen sense for the world around him, so it’s no wonder he felt ready — at 23 years old — to take the production of his new track into his own hands.
“We Can’t” begins with something of a campy jolt — a dialogue retro start that lurches forward into full on contemporary pop music. But the duality lingers and this is what proves Dylan’s songwriting takes that extra step forward. There’s something else under the surface, and the emotions are real.
The video is a colourful twist of the senses. There is partying, dancing, hanging out with beautiful women on the beach, but there is also a raggedness to the way Dylan unleashes the lyrics, which speak of heartbreak and an inability to move forward. We are left with a real impression of what being young is: brilliant and bright, but sometimes too emotional to bear.
