The word “sweltering” comes to mind as you watch and listen to the clip for MAAD’s “New Religion”. It’s sweltering because it’s a bona fide summer jam, sweltering in the heat of the empty desert sprawl and apocalyptic dusty landscape, and sweltering because of the figures who luxuriate in each other’s company, statuesque and sexy. This is a song that can heat up your summer — but it’s also the perfect soundtrack to chill to.
The low-fi beat that opens “New Religion” casts a breezy vibe, but the warmth of MAAD’s voice fills out the space and adds an R&B groove that makes the track an optimistic piece ready to unfurl across your summer. In the clip, we see the world painted in glorious blues, oranges, and whites — it might take a couple of moments before you realize that this is, in fact, the end of the world. Such is the revelry of MAAD in the space she inhabits.
The track was produced by the Grammy-nominated GRADES, and will feature on MAAD’s upcoming EP. Keep your eyes on this star for that, as well as for more releases before the EP drops.
