Maxwell James has made a home for himself in Nashville where his brand of Americana flourishes in the rich music community. His eponymous EP was recorded at Farmland Studios in Nashville, and you can hear the authenticity of both the tracks and the space they inhabit.
Maxwell James is a five-track collection of songs that bring elements of many genres together to best reflect the diverse emotional range that the artist treads through. From the gentle vocal performance of “Blatantly” to the funk-edged “Roll Down Your Window Slowly” — you’ll find something here that will strike a chord with you and echo back.
If there are two elements that stand out in Maxwell James’ music, they are the vocals, which often move towards the rhythmic and land on addictive melodies, and the acoustic guitar riffs that add complexity and delicacy at once. “The More You Say, The Less I Know” is a highlight for both of these reasons, and for the absolute blend of pensive lyrics with a kicky vibe. The organ that takes out the EP on “Feed My Evolution” is also a stand-out addition.
There is enough emotional diversity within these five songs to tilt in the direction of multiple albums. From this point on, we can only look forward to see which path Maxwell James chooses, or if he will continue to excel in exploration.
