When I think parody music, the likes of Weird Al Yankovic and The Lonely Island spring to mind, and while hilarious, they’re not really beats you can genuinely enjoy time and time again. But when your production skills are on point, not only can you pwn the art of parody, you can please plenty of ears, too.
As a regular listener of Soulection Radio, the playfully titled Bowlection Radio stuck out like a sore thumb in my Soundcloud stream when first released over a month ago. Toronto producer Memorecks just released his second Soulection spoof called Bowlection Radio #002: Da Roachina; an innocent little dig at label homie Sango. If you’re familiar with the softly spoken and ever-reflective Soulection boss Joe Kay and his style of hosting, the parody won’t need any explanation. The funny factor comes in the form of those voice-overs, but apart from Memorecks’ hilariously executed observations, the beats are on-brand too. But there’s nothing too funny about them – they’re on point, and surprisingly pretty good.
Check out the very first Bowlection set here, which is a little better IMO (the first time’s always the best, right?) And for reference sake, and cos Joe Kay is actually the man for bringing us banging beats, week after week – hit up Soulection on Soundcloud, too.
