Here it is, Mumford & Sons fans. The long anticipated moment, and what a moment. The first sound of upcoming album Wilder Mind has moved far from the folk sound of the band’s beginnings, but with good reason.
What might be most striking about the track — titled “Believe,” but with a surprisingly melancholic tone for more than half of the song — is the drum beat and roaring electric guitar, not only in contrast to what the band has put out before. Both pick up with the emotions of the song, creating a wonderful unity of effect. The lyrics, though familiar, feel relatable and the tune is catchy and accessible.
And of course, the video itself fits with the effect. We begin with a first person view of driving through a city in nights, watching a symphony of lights dance, gaining momentum with the song, and finally ending on the image that is to be the cover of Wilder Mind. Overall, a promising start for a band on the precipice of great change.
Wilder Mind will be released on the 4th of May, 2015.
