A couple weeks ago Kansas City-based artist Young Boss was brought to my attention. When I first laid my eyes on the title “Like Mike” you really question if such a task could be done; comparing your skills on the mic to arguably the greatest basketball player of all time. YB doesn’t necessarily compare himself to #23, but puts his very own dope and unique spin on how he dreams about being like MJ, while also stating that he needs his team (Paxton and Kerr) to help a long the way. Check out the song for yourself and be sure to check out our conversation about how this idea came to life.
Introduce yourself. Who are you and what is your story?
YB: My name is YoungBoss(@KcYoungboss) and Im a writer/rapper from Kansas City. I got my name from the dope game when I was younger fucking around in these Kansas City streets. I also want to add that I ain’t glorifying that lifestyle bc I got homies doing time and not living from going down that path but I was one of the lucky ones who was able to leave it alone and focus on this music!
What inspired you to make “Like Mike”?
YB: I played sports, especially basketball, growing up so it shows up in a lot of my music. I like using metaphors to bridge the streets and sports and that’s pretty much how Like Mike came about!
What was the process like when making “Like Mike”
YB: Well with me I pride myself on songwriting so I know you don’t have a song without a strong chorus. So I pretty much wrote like 4 different choruses for that Like Mike beat and then out of no where that tune from the old Michael Jordan commercial popped in my head and that just brought everything together!
Like Mike is a tough concept to bring to life, but you pulled it off well. The song is really dope. What was the message you were trying to convey with this record?
YB: I guess the message would be to keep dreaming, grinding, balling and getting money just Like Mike!
What’s next for you that you can share with us?
YB: I’m actually finishing up my next album(King Shit) which will have the “Like Mike” single on it. I hope to have it out this spring on all online retailers.
Anything else that you would like to share with us?
YB: Yeah I want to thank you for all the love, this interview and for what you do for indie music bro! I also want to share that my last project Kings & Hustlers is available online right now and on my website www.HoodBoyMuziKc.com. Also I have a hoodie/T-shirt clothing line(Kings&Hustlers) with new designs available on www.KingsAndHustlers.com.
