After releasing two soul-pop EPs, NYA is unplugging on the Hold On EP. Swinging her soulful voice up amongst acoustic instrumentation, the artist already known for her candid music is letting us even closer.
The backing band NYA brought with her into the studio play expertly alongside her powerhouse vocals, finding the places where the energy can be built up, but never taking over. The title track opens the release with a plucky rhythm and a jazzy impression that is both quick and smooth. “Electric” holds the most instrumentation, and is tethered by piano chords falling steadily behind romantic inclinations.
Fans of NYA will recognize the instantly catchy “Love You To Death”, which was previously featured on New Sick Music. The track finds the jauntiest beat on the EP, but has a haunting intimacy in this acoustic form. “Reconciliation” is a torch song that opens up and burns steadily along; a moody highlight of the collection.
If on her third release NYA is prepared to draw her music into such a raw space, there is no telling where her songwriting will take her next. To keep up with NYA, you can find her on her website, SoundCloud, and Facebook page. You can also follow the artist on Twitter.
