Ever-growing in popularity in the United Kingdom and America, somewhat unlikely Syrian music star Omar Souleyman today released new single “Enssa El Aatab”, alongside news of an upcoming summer release of a second official studio-produced album, which will be entitled Bahdeni Nami. Souleyman, who has also just been signed by German label Monkey Town Records, will team up with established producers Four Tet, Gilles Peterson, and Modeselektor for the upcoming project. The Syrian singer has gained in popularity in the West over the past few years with a string of hit-releases such as “Warni Warni” and “Leh Jani” and playing a number of high-profile shows such as a popular set as the historic Glastonbury Festival in 2011.
A press release stated that the album is currently in the recording stages in Istanbul, and will feature collaborations with poet Ahmad Alsamer, Saz player Khaled Youssef and keyboard player Rizan Said, all who have featured on Souleyman’s tracks in the past.
Modeselektor, who produced first release from the album “Enssa El Aatab”, offered his opinions on the signing with the statement:
“They say that we, Modeselektor, play at an awful lot of parties. Omar Souleyman has sung at a very, very large number of parties – wedding parties. We reckon that fits! The coolest man on the planet threw the wedding bouquet our way and we had no choice but to catch it. Welcome to the Monkeytown family!”
