Patrick Ames is nurturing a passion for the vitality of playing live. This is why his EP, aptly titled Liveness, embraces all the passion and excitement of a live performance. This is a recording that takes ambiance seriously.
You can hear it on the Bossa Nova rerecording of Ames’ own “I Want You”, which was created from an email attachment from Paulo Augustine in Buenos Aires with the vocals recorded over it in one take. Hazy and psychedelic, the track embraces a mood: chill. “Suspicions” finds a spaciousness in mediative repetition, though the subject matter is something of a juxtaposition. “Suspicions can come true,” Ames repeats as the acoustic guitar plucks rhythmically.
But it is on album opener “Bang Bang Bang” that we get a sense of Ames’ mission. Sure, he has a knack for a snappy beat, a vibrant backing vocal element, but he is also not afraid to say what he thinks. “Bang Bang Bang” takes on gun violence with a Dylan-esque dropping of quick-paced lyrics and layers up as it goes. Closer “Want to Believe” is groovier, and this time critiques a world devoted to the latest gadget. Once again, this is a remix — the original appeared on Liveness — but the new tone closes this EP wisely.
Liveness will be released on April 4th 2020. To hear more from Patrick Ames, you can find him on his website, SoundCloud, and Facebook page. You can also follow him on Twitter for more music and news.
