Unique almost doesn’t cover it when it comes to People Like You. This five piece band creates psychedelic vaudeville tunes with a punk mentality — and they use everything at their disposal to do it. Their new track, “Why Say Why” delivers the ideologies that they stand for and paints a mantra: “Live your life. Don’t say why. Say why not!”
If there was any band to be highlighted for taking their own advice, People Like You seems to be it. From the accordion and upbeat rhythm that kicks it all off to the spread of images that make up the accompanying video, People Like You are going for it, never stopping to ask why. “Why Say Why” sports addictively gritty vocals and a heavy dose of groove and sticks with you in its catchiness, but also in its positivity.
The video, on the other hand, is a rampage of footage and plot that feels at times delightfully impenetrable and rewards multiple viewings. Bright colours and camaraderie set the joyous tone until war breaks out — People Like You not being afraid to turn their feel-good track into fictionalized political critique. And why should they be? Why not?
