Fresh from exclusivity to Apple Music and hot outta hell, Queens of the Stone Age are here to take your soul (if you haven’t yet sold it to them) with the music video for “The Way You Used To Do” — the lead single from their latest album, Villains.
In a tribute to the 1941 film Hellzapoppin’, Josh Homme conceived the video as a thematic tie-in to the themes of Villains, as well as a chance to ham it up with his smooth swagger as he slings himself across a variety of set pieces and into a host of dazzling costumes. Yes, when he leads you into the video with a sly, “Wait til you see this deal, man! It’ll blow your mind!”, we know we’re in for an experience, but the colourful thrills — and definite chills — that come never cease to surprise. It’s so sensational that I’m rhyming.
And while you’ve probably heard the song — it was an alt-rock summer anthem, and QOTSA are currently on their world tour, spreading their infectious guitar melodies and strong personalities in a city near you — it is given new life with the video. Plus, it’s never too late to appreciate “The Way You Used To Do”‘s deceptive simplicity and the way the track plays with silence, noise, and everything in between.
