Rebel ACA is English. French Monkey Wrench is, well, French. Together their passion for music expands, pushing each other to create the best, finding the place where their individual talents meet and meld and shine. “African James Bond” is a smooth and heady slide of melody: it’s quick but not-heavy handed, dark but not stuffy. French Monkey Wrench’s beats drive the track while Rebel ACA’s quick-step vocals smooth it out. Both multi-instrumentalists who share responsibility and roles, the track shows an exemplary attention to detail and an awareness of what makes a good hook.
The track was created with the thought of a friend of Rebel ACA and French’s who suffered from depression. A talented musician, the friend “lost [his] song” while Rebel and French “lost a friend”. As the title suggests, there are spy-esque undertones to the melodies, but overwhelmingly this is a unique composition of complexity pared back. It’s all there, but it’s easily accessible. “African James Bond” is bound to be stuck in your head for a while.
“African James Bond” is the first single from the upcoming album Sunday’s Cool. To hear more from Rebel ACA and French Monkey Wrench, you can find them on their Facebook page, SoundCloud, and on Youtube. You can also follow Rebel ACA on Twitter.
