It’s hard, when faced with the end of something big and important and emotional, to even think about allowing yourself to go through it all again. This is the theme of The Soft Spots’ latest single, “Goodbye Again”. The Philadelphia band creates dreamy indie-pop soundscapes with snappy beats while wielding chaos as a weapon.
It’s all about the tactful control of messiness with “Goodbye Again”, and the video compliments this with colourful and fragmented images that are as mysterious as they are psychedelic. We see a figure in shadow from behind, contrasted by the brilliance of colours that wash every image; then we get moments with Shane Gallagher and the band, and even through his sunglasses it feels like a moment of personal connection to underscore the emotional weight of the lyrics.
“I don’t wanna fall in love again. I don’t wanna give it another try,” Gallagher sings, his voice effected so as to blend with the shimmering synths and guitar lines. The video flashes with bright lights, sparing no aesthetic expense and going for straight-on stimulation. And the tumultuous choices work because love is messy, but The Soft Spots have taken the mess and organized it into an addictive synth pop haze jam.
