It’s difficult to say what the first draw of Stef Chura’s track “Scream” is. Could it be the buzzy grunge guitar, or the smooth-shifting but ever-powerful vocals? Perhaps it doesn’t matter: it’s the combination that makes this track stun.

The accompanying clip opens with the now-trope image of a cheerleader in a gym, but prepare for all expectations to be exceeded. With the word “Scream” across her uniform, Stef Chura rocks the guitar as the clip jumps between her gymnasium performance and images of other students living their lives: smoking in the bathroom, putting on makeup, and carrying textbooks. It’s realistic high school shot with care. It’s women being their everyday badass selves, and drama unfolding around every corner.

At under two and a half minutes long, “Scream” packs a punch. The song comes off Midnight, the second album by the Detroit-based musician. With Will Toledo of Car Seat Headrest producing, this is one record you won’t want to miss.
