2016 is destined to be a big year for Top Dawg Entertainment. TDE’s CEO Top Dawg announced on Twitter in January that everyone on the label will drop an album this year and the hip-hop community has been waiting in anticipation ever since. Kendrick Lamar kicked things off with untitled unmastered. in March and singles from Schoolboy Q and Isaiah Rashad gave fans a taste of what is to come. However, as the halfway point of 2016 approaches, things have been relatively quiet from hip-hop’s hottest indie label.
Adding to the list of TDE singles is SZA with “twoAM.” The smooth R&B track showcases SZA’s versatile talent over a drum-heavy beat. The song draws from traditional R&B and, at first listen, even sounds a little like an older Rhianna track. However, SZA is the clear owner of this one: her personal lyrics and the “#freestyle” tag on the song suggest that TDE’s only female artist wrote it herself. This beautiful release ends with a beat switch and some bouncy lyrics. The song shows that, while TDE may be keeping their album releases low-key, their impressive rooster has definitely been grinding. Give the track a listen above.
