Calling everyone in need of a high energy ultra-cool, near-retro jam to carry you through to the end of the week: I may have what you’re looking for.
The Phantom Sound presents a sleek, high-contrast video for a song almost reminiscent of Madonna’s “Ray of Light” but with a little more punk spirit thrown in. Comparisons have been drawn to Blondie, and in fact, Clem Burke, the drummer of Blondie, contributes his massive talent to the album, as does Pierre DeReeder, known for his bass playing in Rilo Kiley. We’re talking female-vocalist powerhouse bands here, and The Phantom Sound is about the join those ranks. The name behind The Phantom Sound? Marisa Schlussel, singer and songwriter extraordinaire.
Just as with the artists she lists as influences (Bowie, Duran Duran, and Siouxsie and the Banshees, to name a few) The Phantom Sound has built an aesthetic to compliment her sound. Visually pleasing, crisp and classy-cool, it all comes together in “Release Me”, which was directed by Ashley Jones. Name dropping aside, her own style is coming across clear and vibrant. The music suggests an artist with a sound already fully-formed.
