You can feel the heat rising in waves off the setting of Tkay Maidza’s clip for latest single, “Shook”, but it’s Maidza’s flow that really sets the track on fire.
The Adelaide artist has spent time exploring genre and finding her groove. Last Year was Weird — the name of her R&B hip-hop album and fashion label — is her foray into autonomy and embracing a new path. “Shook” is her first single to be released on 4AD and revels in assertive nostalgia.
“Shook” walks the line between clarity and chaos. The track begins with noisy soundscapes that break away into Maidza’s clear vocals. The melody trickles down around her as Maidza makes sure any listeners are thoroughly, well, shook. There is a touch of Missy Elliot in the beats and 90s influence to the clothing as our hero wakes up in a junkyard and explores her surroundings.
As is to be expected, it isn’t long before Maidza is running the show. Just as the music changes from busy to crystalline, the junkyard goes from a mystery to a kingdom. Whether she’s looking devilish in all-red inside an abandoned bus or whipping around the lot with white lace and wings, it’s clear who’s in charge.
