If you dig Kendrick Lamar, you might want to listen up. Maryland rapper Vaunfe is the latest artist to catch our attention here at NSM. The 23-year-old artist has been making a name for himself and his crew, Hostile Youth, for about the last year. His ideas and delivery bear close resemblance to Kendrick’s recent releases, but Vaunfe’s music has a certain raw potential that suggests that he could transform this style into something distinctly his own.
On his new track “Limit Unconscious,” Vaunfe reflects on the world around him and wonders if he is doing what he should be. He smoothly raps about God and women with the ease of a mature artist at the top of the game, despite his newcomer status. Freddie Joachim’s easy beat provides the ideal backdrop for these thoughtful bars. However, the element that really sticks out is the sheer rawness on Vaunfe’s part. The song, as good as it is, is begging to be reshaped into something more compact. This is our first experience listening to Vaunfe over here at NSM, but we are excited to see how the Maryland artist transforms that raw potential into something exceptional.
