Old school VHS footage of rising UK rapper Stormzy has reportedly been leaked to Noisey in the past 24 hours. The video supposedly depicts an eight year old Stormzy (real name Michael Omari) performing a self-written rap whilst playing Playstation at home in 2001. The video was said to be recorded by Stormzy’s mother, who appeared recently in his video for hit song “Know Me From”.
Last year, Stormzy became the first ever unsigned rapper to appear on prestigious TV music showcase Later… With Jools Holland, and in October 2014 won a MOBO award for Best Grime Act as well as this year coming third in the BBC Sound of 2015 Awards.
However, there are already people calling the video’s bluff, claiming it isn’t in fact Stormzy at all (with accusations it’s actually his little brother) and is simply a constructed marketing scheme to draw attention to him. There is admittedly something slightly staged about the video and the way it is edited, not helped by the fact that the child seems to be holding a PS3 controller (which obviously wasn’t released in 2001), but we’re still unsure. Early April Fools prank? Either way, it’s a cute video, and has worked in focusing attention on the MC.
