Will Butler‘s solo work has been much anticipated by fans of Canadian indie rock band Arcade Fire, of which he is a core member.

“Clean Monday” was written for The Guardian as a project to write a song a day based on the biggest headline of that day. This particular tune is about the Greek debt crisis, as noted in lyrics like “It’s just a passing money loss”.

While the similarities between Will Butler’s vocals and those of his brother — Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler — can’t be ignored, the focus on a melody with fewer layers separates the solo work from the sound of the band quite successfully.

The American multi-instrumentalist has previously been nominated for an Oscar (with Canadian musician Owen Pallett) for their work on Spike Jonze’s film ‘Her’.  His debut solo album, Policy, will be out on March 16th, 2015.
