ASHRR exemplify ideas of freedom with “Waves”

In an interview with Consequence of Sound, ASHRR explained that their single “Waves” is about “life’s struggles, redemption, and the guttural instinct for survival against impossible odds and the realization that by letting anxiety wash over you and pass, you can free yourself.”

The trio made up of producers Ethan Allen and Josh Charles, as well as singer Steven Davis, have set up shop in LA’s rock underground, and “Waves” is another taste of their darkwave-flavoured brand of atmospheric rock. Powered by reverb and rhythm, the track pulses with a catchy melody and straight-delivered vocals.

The accompanying clip, meanwhile, is spot-on. For a song embracing freedom and perseverance, the journey of a forgotten goldfish becomes heart-wrenching. We watch as the ex-pet finds and loses freedom, creating a comparison of the appearance of safety and a more dangerous, bigger world. By the time the song and clip ends, there is a sense of uncertainty, but also a newfound awareness.

To keep up with ASHRR, you can find them on their website, Bandcamp, and Facebook page. You can also follow the band on Twitter for more music and news.
